The women were still in the drawing room when Will and Heath emerged. All the women, that is, with the exception of Jenna.

“Where is Miss Hughes, Mother?” Will asked casually as the party moved into the hall and their guests prepared to take their leave.

The duchess brushed an invisible thread from her skirts. “Miss Hughes is out, dear.”

“Out? Now? Where?”

“She was called to a… neighbor’s.”

“A neighbor’s? For what?”

The duchess blinked at him. “Well, to help with a… ah, feminine issue.”

“A feminine issue?”

“Stop repeating everything I say, dear. It’s stilting the conversation.”

“What kind of—Oh.” Will stopped abruptly. “I can’t imagine I wish to know exactly what that might entail. Well, I suppose that makes sense.”

His mother froze. “I beg your pardon?”

“Her father was a surgeon,” Will reminded her unnecessarily. “And she told me she assisted him from the time she was young. I’m sure she’s exceedingly well qualified to help with a feminine issue.”

The duchess’s eyes cleared. “Indeed. Very well qualified. She is a remarkable woman.”

“When will she be back?”

“Miss Hughes seemed to think she might be needed most of the night.”

Will quashed the disappointment that washed through him, feeling a prick of guilt at his selfishness. Jenna would never turn her back on someone who needed help. And Will certainly wasn’t going anywhere. He’d be here when she got back.

“Did someone go with her?” he asked suddenly, not liking the idea of her out somewhere by herself.

“Luke is with her.”

That didn’t make him feel much better. In fact, if he’d been envious of Heath for escorting her into the dining room, the thought of the golden butler’s spending the night with Jenna made him nearly woozy with an envious resentment. His jaw clenched.

“She’ll be fine,” his mother said, patting him on the arm as if he were a troubled child. “She’s done this many times before.”

Of course she has, Will thought. In fact, she had told him not to interfere. She had told him to stay out of her way. And if he was a man of his word, he would respect her wishes and do just that.

“Thank you, Your Grace, for such a wonderful evening.” Lady Julia had moved toward them.

“You’re always welcome here, dear.” The duchess beamed at her.

Heath had joined Will on his other side. “Did your enchanted princess retire early?” Heath asked in low tones as he accepted his gloves from a footman.

“Miss Hughes had to leave unexpectedly,” Will muttered.

The earl’s lips compressed, and Will was sure Heath was fighting a grin. “It would seem this happens to you a great deal, Worth. The lady disappearing without explanation. Do you suppose it’s just you, or was it something you said?”

“Oh, do shut up, Boden.”

The earl smirked. “You know, Worth, if you married her, she might feel compelled to leave you a note next time.”
